Trumped by Mommy

By , September 8, 2003

So I thought I had it bad. I told my Mom my banking story and she one-upped me but good. Seems that after my dad passed away, she went to her bank (which is now a counter in a Safeway, but that’s a whole other rant) with the death certificate to have him taken off the account.

The teller accidentally removed HER from the account instead, and then informed her that without my father’s signature she would be unable to access the funds in the account.

Now THAT’S customer disservice!

Ok Peasprout, here it goes: If I were your mom, I would have spoken directly with a New Accounts Officer or the Branch Manager. Most banks have some sort of way they can conduct “account maintenance” on their systems, meaning they can correct errors that were made. If I were handling the situation, I would have added your mom’s name back to the account, so I could then remove the CORRECT person’s name. It shouldn’t have been a big problem for them to correct, seeing that it was their error. One more thing- all banks/credit unions are different, so they could have done something completely opposite from what I suggested. Let me know what happened!

OMG! That is so sad. And the circle of disservice goes round and round.

@CBrichard, I am not surprised to learn you work in a bank, as you seem to have the perfect demeanor for such a job. Thank you very much for your literal, no-nonsense reply. The sound advice has been duly noted.
